Eugene's own Devour has been nominated to be on this season of the Food Network's "The Great Food Truck Race"! For those who don't know, TGFTR is a competition that features food trucks from across the country travelling to different cities and competing with other outstanding street food vendors for a final prize of $100k!

We're very excited about this, even though it might mean having to leave our beloved Willamette Valley for a while. And it is an honor to have even been nominated in the first place.

Devour won this year's Ninkasi Food Cart Cook off, taking first place in the popular competition. This year's entry was the Carne Asada grilled sandwich, and Devour did not disappoint the many fans in attendance.

It's a testament to the quality of the Eugene Food Carts that the competition was so fierce, and a great reminder to support Local Businesses.

The Devour Cafe!

The Devour Cafe was established way back in the year 2010. Times were different then. Things moved a bit slower. The idea that a grilled panini sandwich Cafe could serve fresh savory slices of heaven at a low price wasn't so revolutionary back in those simpler times.

In the several months that followed it's inception, Devour grew and expanded on it's original mission. Now offering more than just a great place to meet up for a sandwich, Devour incorporated a take-away counter, offering choice in an era of choicelessness, and letting patrons decide if they want to eat in, or grab something for later, whichever they choose.

It's been a long haul. But now looking back, it's safe to say that Devour has established what must be the finest grilled panini sandwich shop ever to be located on Olympic avenue, in front of jerry's and walmart. Conveniently placed in Springfield, offering competitively priced delicious savory sandwiches, Devour has come a long way from it's humble origins. And we are here today to celebrate that fact.

Iced Coffee greatness

Here at Devour we're always looking for new and exciting ways to get our caffeine fix. And Vietnamese Iced Coffee has been one of our favorite ways to get that sweet black gold pumping through our veins.

This recipe (from Allrecipes.com) has everything we love in a cold coffee drink. It's easy to make, and tastes amazing:

Ingredients

4 cups water
1/2 cup dark roast ground coffee beans
1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
16 ice cubes

Directions

Brew coffee with water using your preferred method to make brewed coffee. Spoon 2 tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk into each of 4 coffee cups. Pour 1 cup of fresh hot coffee into each cup, and stir to dissolve the milk.
Serve guests cups of coffee, and give each one a tall glass with 4 ice cubes, and a long handled spoon. Guests pour hot coffee over the ice cubes and stir briskly with the long handled spoon, making an agreeable clatter with the ice cubes to chill the coffee.

It's a great way to get your caffeine, and pairs amazingly well with a Devour Sandwich, of course. We make it with Pacori Coffee at home, but if there is enough interest we'll start serving in the Devour Cafe! So what do you think? Should Devour start making Vietnamese Iced Coffee? Let us know!

The citizens band radio. Oh yeah bringing back the classic. Well at least trying it out. A find at the recent flea market. This is an emergency version that plugs into a 12 volt cigarette plug. Then you pull out the magnetic annetena base, stick that to your rig and boom 39 channels for sandwich signals.

Tim Lewis and Sandwiches!

Every week Tim Lewis drives down to our commercial area of Springfield to deliver some awesome photography action.

". . . what can I say? Completely, totally hooked on it. I love creating images, mostly portraits . . . I like moody, highly dramatic pictures . . . with rich, dark blacks and a good amount of tone".

So yeah he usually shoots humans but he can really make a sandwich sing as well. The old VW sofa seems to make a unique backdrop. Coupled with his tools, Tim produces some great textures that pop the food out. He must be digging the efforts since he always eats the subjects.


Epic sandwich shoot in the making! The Devour crew often decides how to cut the sand up and Lewis deals with the aftermath.


He's got his funky light all set up. Sandwich soon to be devoured after one more trip down the runway.

Friday Nights with Devour

Devour will be in Elmira for LaVelle Vineyards' weekly event: Friday Night Flights. Every Friday evening from 6 - 8 we have the bus set up with the week's menu, plus some other special wine tasting goodness. Live music with a candle lit barrel room experience.

Simultaneously we have our other bus at Ninkasi Brewery. This winter from 5-9 we will be parked in the patio serving hot sandwiches next to the blue flames of the gas fire pit. Live music, Friday Night Artwalks and other Whitaker events can be experienced from the stainless steel of the brewery.

We have made friends with this great shop, Oak Street Vintage. Located on Oak St, it's a fun converted house with fabulous wears, from vintage cowboy boots to funky kitchen goods. We are eying this hypnotizing rotating wall art thingie for the cafe. All sorts of cool stuff! If you're looking for retro wear for you or your pad this a great place to start.

Less than 72 hours in Seattle and three runs to Dick's Drive-In. Yes, it is that good. Personal family traditions of Saturday lunch on Queen Anne with a movie at Uptown Theater (now closed).

The same menu since 1950's. Hand cut fries with Tarter. Tasty and cheap burgers. Milkshakes spun in vintage mixers. Drive your ride right up to it and order from their simple and perfect menu.

A Slow Food Eugene event at Nib: we met up with Evan Gregoire from Boondockers Farm, who specializes in heirloom breeds of vegetables and other fine products with a focus on organic practices. Flea Market on Sunday down at the Fairgrounds! The Redoux Parlour had a satellite shop set up. Employee and designer Melissa was knocking out some very cozy fingerless fleece gloves which are an essential for gripping the wheel on the Devour buses in the winter. After some fine purchases we trotted down to Off the Waffle and enjoyed their fine work. Maybe we should pack some along with us when we get back to it in January? Let's hear some feedback on it.

Dropped in to see our homies Eric and Robert and Eric down at Pacori Coffee today and had a fun tour of the operations. Learned some very cool stuff about coffee roasting. Who knew that there is this crazy flammable skin (Chaff) that flakes off of the beans when roasted? Maybe a good camp fire starter? Definitely some cool compost action. Artistically labled sacks of beans were stacked up and ready to roast. It was the real deal for sure! Thanks for the back up Air Pot fellas. Hopefully no more KIA coffee dispensers.

The Devour Cafe! Our home base and commissary kitchen, down in the soul of Springfield (2787 Olympic Ave Suite #6). Currently our menu consists of our Devour standards:

Roasted Turkey and Cranberry Mayo with Cheddar
Black Forest Ham and Baby Swiss with Honey Mustard
Port Brined Roast Beef and Horseradish Cheddar

We're serving specials from the weekly bus menu, as well as Cafe-only creations, which will include meat-free and meat-licious offerings. Soups, beverages, tables, chairs, and a cool bus bench seat await! Dine in or dine out. Our hours are from 11-3 M-F.

I had a great lunch today thanks to Dave and his flavor wagon: Viva! Vegetarian Grill. He hooked me up with one of his Vegan Philly Cheessteak sandwiches which was very very tasty. Dave has built a super cool food cart which he toes with one of those funky mail jeeps (wish I had one) and has a great menu laid out that includes many savory vegan items that look darn delicious! Sweet Chili Chicken Salad: Sweet and kinda hot chili mayo folded with roasted chicken thighs and grilled with dill havarti

Vietnamese Sandwich Devour style: Seared tofu, pickled carrot and radish, spicy aioli, and grilled with cilantro

Italian Mother in Law: Focaccia hot pressed with hot coppa, hot pesto, hot dried tomatoes and warm muenster cheese

Salads of the day: German potato salad, sesame noodles, avocado with greens, and oven-roasted tomato dressing

Devour

My mom's a great cook. My dad's a great cook. I'm a great eater. That's where it all started.

In high school, I got a fry job on a PM line. I was burned, smelled like old grease, and worked 'till the wee hours. I loved it.

Culinary schoolin' while working at a fancy hotel in downtown Seattle. I flipped eggs on room-service duty and peeled carrot after carrot after carrot...

Then I was in Boston prepping away at the most delicious restaurants in town. Tales and teachings only the Atlantic side could serve.

Back in the Northwest and heading up the smallest kitchens ever! Slicing cases of mushrooms, degreasing my tiny convection oven, blanching spaetzle, whisking fondue and then to the butcher shop to crack bones, learn the way of the butcher, and study the food business.

Then one night something snaps. Ideas go from my ‘dream’ lobe to my ‘do’ lobe. They touch the mental pedal. I awake and fears sizzle away.

I know what I need to do.
I know how to do it.
And I call it DEVOUR!
